Enabling Environment

At Annabel’s we believe that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. Enabling environments encourage young children to play because they feel relaxed, comfortable and ‘at home’ in them.  When children feel emotionally safe and secure they are able to explore, find out about the place they are in and, most importantly, they are able to learn.

Our environment is more than physical space because it contains the emotions of our children, our staff and our parents.  If children feel safe in the emotional environment they can express their feelings safely, knowing that our staff are nearby to help them if they feel overwhelmed.


Children gain enormous benefits from learning outdoors.  At Annabel’s  our students have access to outdoor spaces  as an extension of their classroom, as well as a large tree lined garden and paved play area.  Being outdoors allows our students to move around without many of the restrictions of being inside. Being outdoors supports confidence and allows opportunities for big scale play, problem-solving and creativity in the company of their friends.

Rich environments, both indoors and outdoors, have an immediate positive effect on the quality of children’s learning and development.  We ensure that Annabel’s is a comfortable, interesting, attractive and interactive place for our children to engage in. We alter our classroom environments regularly to take into consideration the developmental interests and learning needs of our students. We believe that a school environment should make children feel safe, secure and happy.
